Donald Miller ‘Vacations’ Away from Christianity
Published December 6th, 2009 by Dwayna in Donald Miller, Emerging Church, GeneralToday, as I was driving around Atlanta, I came upon a radio station where someone was interviewing Donald Miller, author of Blue Like Jazz. Unlike the great missionaries of the past in history who died martyrs’ deaths for their faith in Jesus, Donald suggested that we all have life “stories”, and if we don’t like the “story” we just need to change it and improvise a new one to live for ourselves. He recommended his book tour for A Million Miles in a Thousand Years and spoke about the value of vacationing. There was no mention of obedience to the Bible or love for Jesus no matter the cross. Knowing Jesus as the Way, the Truth, and the Life [John 14:6] was evidently no compass for such a “vacation.”
So, why is this person considered a Christian author? With Thomas Nelson as his publisher, it further illustrates the warped state of our confusing, Christian culture today.
Donald Miller mentioned that Susan Isaacs would be joining him on the tour. He laughed as he told of the comedy she performs with the theme of being married to God—a God who needs marriage counseling.
Donald recounted how we have all been taught that God completes us, but Don suggested, “He [God] does not.” He went on to explain that God cannot “complete” us in a world of “negative emotions.” We have to take charge and change our “story” to find true happiness. For example, Donald Miller shares how he decided to take a long bike ride around the country to find a better “story” for himself.
He transitioned off to an island talking about how Adam must have felt lonely without Eve when he had to name the animals.
I was thinking as I listened in frustration to his tour de France of contemplation and thought to myself, “This vacation with Donald Miller on the radio is wearing me out!”
Any mature Christian would rather stay on the road of the cross, one day at a time feeling Jesus near no matter the cost. . I would rather have the God of the Bible as my Guide for my short time here on earth. The same old Gospel, which guarantees persecution, is still the only Gospel that saves, and the comfort of God’s love along the way is still enough when I don’t write my own “story” but do His will for me. Life is too short for “a million miles” to nowhere. A thousand years of humanism cannot compare to a moment of eternity with a Savior like Jesus.
