The Celebrity Church Must Die (only if it’s not emergent)
Published September 18th, 2007 by Chris Pajak in Emerging Church, Megachurches, Rob Bell, Ya Gotta LaughHere is an interesting article written by Bob Hyatt editor of the online emergent rag, the next wave e-zine.
I find it interesting that though he lambasts Randy and Paula White, which I agree with as these people are a plague in the church world, he already built in his disclaimer re: folks like Rob Bell , who are celebrities in their own right . He has already anticipated the criticisms and the obvious appearance of a double standard.
Here is an amazing quote from the article about Ron Bell;
“It’s humble in the best sense of knowing that yes, he’s a captivating speaker, but no, he’s not interested in taking away anything at all from you learning from your community. That tells me at a base level whose Kingdom Rob is really interested in building. Books, big church, whatever… That kind of celebrity I can live with. “
So we can live with some Christian celebrity? Rob’s okay because he’s not in it for the money or the houses.
One of the few truths ever expounded by Ayn Rand is this; there are two kinds of "second-handers" the ones who after money, and, the worst kind, those that are after power.
