“Knowing AND (not “or”) Doing…the Christian Life.” Young Pastors Confuse The Two
Published December 6th, 2007 by Tony Rose in Christian Freedom, Emerging Church, New Evangelicalism, Seeker SensitiveThere have been a number of posts here recently regarding a new trend of young pastors like Tadd Grandstaff and Steven Furtick, who are emphasizing a need to downplay doctrine and “knowledge,” and trading it for evangelism and “doing.”
This has led to a number of blog discussions I have had regarding the balance of these, and the error that they are indirectly proportional to one another.
In response, I have written a letter/response/article to a dialog I was having regarding the “knowing” AND the “doing” of the Christian life. I describe how these pastors actually do what they condemn by leaving their congregations with no Scriptural meat to “do” anything, because they lack the Scriptural “knowledge” that gives hope for true change.
The point: “Doing” is impossible without the “knowing.”
“I know a ton of things that are not Biblical but the effort required to eliminate them from my life took and continues to take an enormous amount of effort compared to the fact that I “know” that they needed to go.”
Is that fair? Have you found many things to be more a doing thing than a knowing thing?
My heart cried out and I responded with this article: "Knowing AND (not "or") Doing…the Christian Life."
